Getting the right trade-in value on your car

For those thinking of changing their car in these difficult times, there are a number of factors to be considered.
Potential re-sale value of your new car may be high on your list, but this can be so difficult to estimate and, anyway, it is not really going to matter for the next couple of years.
Perhaps the most persuasive factor for many is the trade-in value that the dealer will give on your existing vehicle. This is right up there with finance terms and the price of the new vehicle but for me, it is psychologically more important.
Finance terms are so hard to figure out that most of us do not bother trying. We probably all recognize that this is a dangerous decision but short of a degree in mathematics, it is like banging your head against the wall.
The price of the new car is also so hard to evaluate, are you being overcharged? are you getting a bargain? Often, this judgment is influenced by the personality of the dealer – do you trust him? is there any kind of empathy?
The variable are so challenging that many of us have been drawn to the growing number of supermarkets specialising in used cars. The general feeling is that you can get a reasonable overall deal including the car finance. These supermarkets are not always the cheapest but, at least, there are not many nasty surprises.
A friend of mine recently purchased a used Citroen from one of the UK’s leading used car supermarkets and was pretty pleased with the deal. I asked here what swung the deal for her and she said it was the price that they offered for her car !
Don’t you just find the psychology fascinating?

I used a Car Craft supermarket to change my daughter's car. We had bought her a small car after her test and she wanted something bigger.

Brian Jones's comment is interesting. One of my friends used CarCraft and was pretty happy. He said that there guys there were very flexible and helped him re-arrange the finance and move it from one car to another.

We visited motorpoint newport over the weekend and was outstanded by the sheer size of the stock levels. The salesman was very helpfull and did not put any pressure on us, very good prices and a nice atmosphere.

I visited Motorpoint and when I arrived to look at the advertised Ford Focus on Internet the car looked great. I found a salesman I asked for a test drive he said to keep costs down they don't do test drives with the price of fuel. They asked me when I was looking to buy at which point I thought I’m off!!

As a single parent who knows little about cars, in my personal experience I found buying a vehicle from a car supermarket to be an easy option. The salesman was helpful and took the time to explain to me exactly what the different options were and spoke to me in layman’s terms!

I recentley brought a vehicle from a leading car supermarket and I was not pushed into anything, the salesman was very professional and the whole process was hassle free. I was so impressed that one month later I bought another carfor my wife, who also was impressed by the service we received. Even when I had a slight fault wth the car the whole thing was sorted straight away to give us complete peace of mind. I even received a £50 pound check for recomending my wife as a customer.
