Driver distractions

Keep your eyes on the road !

The results of last year's poll by Autoglass were interesting, but not surprising.

The survey, completed last year by more than 3,000 drivers, looked at the distractions motorists succumb to, when at the wheel of a motor vehicle.

Autoglass_logo2.jpgComing out on top, with 51% of votes, was texting whilst driving, closely followed by talking on the telephone, with 45%. Anyone who spends time on the roads of the United Kingdom could have told you this though.

How often do you see a car not moving even when a traffic light has turned green, because the driver is still busy texting away? Or, having to brake suddenly when they realise the car in front has slowed down, whilst their eyes have been diverted?

Other top ten distractions: changing the radio station/CD player, staring at an accident, eating or drinking, children in the car, chatting to a passenger, road rage, having an argument and lighting a cigarette.

Whilst talking on the phone or texting are genuine distractions, as are staring at accidents or arguing, I would question whether talking to a passenger, changing the radio station or children being in the car, should be considered as such.

It also angers me when you hear reports of drivers being dished out a £60 fine, and given three points, for eating a Kit-Kat, or a banana at the wheel.

Someone who cannot command full attention on the road whilst having a conversation with a passenger, eating, changing the radio station or having children in the car probably should not be allowed behind the wheel in the first place.

Can a driver really be expected to stop every time they want a biscuit?

The funniest statistic of the survey was that men were twice as likely to be distracted by looking at someone they fancy.

Now who could have guessed that?

I do love surveys, I find them so amusing but why is it that no-one ever asks me for my opinion. Am I invisible?
I sometimes see other people being interviewed and I might hover and then nonchalantly walk by, but still they do not stop me.
Am I being too keen?

A mate of mine knows this guy that got pulled up and fined £60 for eating a banana whilst he waited at traffic lights.
The Police said that he was driving even though he was not moving. They said it would be ok if he was stopped like parked but not when he was stopped in the flow of traffic.
The only sensible thing that they said was that he might not then be paying proper attention when he moved away on the green light. It seems he might run over a pedestrian whilst distracted.
A bit sad really.

Impatience is such a big factor to our distractions behind the wheel but who has not unwrapped a chocolate bar or snack whilst sitting in standstill traffic then eaten it as you drive along. I cannot believe you can get a £60 fine for this, it is no different to smoking and I am sure you cannot get fined for that...yet!

I think the worst distraction has to be mobile telephones. Man times I have seen people driving along reading a text message or even worse trying to send one. Are these people mad???
