EyesOn Design, initiated about 24 years ago, is a program masterminded and attended by an exclusive transportation design community to make sure that design always complements functionality when it comes to cars. Every year before Father’s day, EyesOn Design prepares a sequence of events over four days, all about venerating creativity in car manufacturing.

eyesondesign2.jpgThe event starts with a night for car designers during which the world’s major car designers gather to celebrate and discuss the art of car-making. On the second day, the prestigious Lifetime Design Achievement Award is given out to the one creative mind who demonstrated highly automotive design skills on that year. This year’s award went to designer Walter de’Silva of the Volkswagen Group as he has successfully ‘added flare and excitement to a very functional look. His Volkswagen and Audi designs are very clean and on trend and have a lot of customer appeal,’ according to former winner Jack Telnack. Other designers who have previously won the Award include Tom Gale, Chuck Jordan, Sergio Pininfarina and Shiro Nakamura.

After the winner has been revealed, attendees get access to the Lingenfelter Collection in Michigan owned by Ken Lingenfelter, a car enthusiast, to say the least. This collection, which is usually closed to the public, allows car-lovers to admire about 150 rare vehicles including Corvettes, muscle cars, a Bugatti Veyron, an Enzo Ferrari and a Lamborghini Reventón. The end and highlight of the entire event takes place on the Sunday of Father’s Day and is devoted to the highly-acclaimed EyesOn Design Car Show where an average of 250 cars are displayed, chosen from around the world depending on the year’s theme - 2011’s theme being ‘Designing for the Future.’ The event takes place at the legendary Edsel & Eleanor Ford House Estate in Grosse Ponte Shores, Michigan.

For four entire days: cars, car-makers and car-lovers are all gathered in the same place and for the same reasons. For car enthusiasts, EyesOn Design is without a doubt the place to be, except that just a few places are available to the public to quickly snatch – and at a cost.

I am pleased for Volkswagen, they have come a long way in the recent years and have produced some cars that go well beyond the functional.
