Mobile phone use whilst driving
causing more deaths

Using electronic devices whilst behind the wheel can have devastating consequences.

We are all aware that we should not be using mobile phones, or anything else electronic for that matter, whilst behind the wheel. Although it is punishable by penalty of points on your licence, this does not seem to deter many people and fatal accidents are the outcome.

texting-while-driving.jpgThe Mail Online recently reported that there had been a rise in the number of deaths directly involving young drivers and mobile devices. It seems that too many young drivers simply choose to disregard the law and use their phones or pick up their MP3 players. The result is loss of concentration and a tragedy in the making.

It is not exclusively the youth of today that are at fault, this problem seems to pervade all generations to include pedestrians as well as drivers. We have all seen pedestrians who cross roads seemingly oblivious to traffic just because they are  ‘wired’ up to their i-Pod.

The bottom line is that we need to be more respectful of road conditions and mindful that we are not invincible. We need to be more aware of other drivers and those around us too. How else are we ever going to reduce these horrifying statistics if we do not abide by the law?

So, what is new here? We all know it is illegal and all know that it is dangerous. People do it because they can get away with it.
If you wake up the morning after you have killed a child or a family because (perhaps just partly because) you were talking on the mobile, then your life is scared forever.
You might try to tough it out but it is going to affect you. Even at the lowest level, you are not going to have a licence for a while, probably no job and you won't be able to afford the insurance anyway.

I agree, we as a driving nation have become very relaxed with mobile devises. The police are either not so hot on it or we have become more sneaky when we do it. It is very hard to ignore the buzzing from your bag or pocket but as David says above, it could result in someone’s life!

That may be all very well for new cars but the older cars would not be able to take that kind of kit and would people be willing to pay for it?

I think it's just people in general being irresponsible - people think 'oh it can't happen to me' and then before they know it Bam. I think if more people backed charities like Brake, it would be more of a norm to just be careful whilst on the road!
