The five worst roads in Britain

Paul Compton Paul Compton
Friday 4 February 2011

Our friends at Netcars.com, have kindly contributed the following thoughts on the five worst roads in Britain. We would be pleased to recieve your votes for the worst road or junction.

003021_01350840.jpgThelwall Viaduct, Cheshire

Connecting Warrington to Preston, the Thelwall Viaduct is infamous for tailbacks and lengthy traffic jams. And because it’s part of the M6 – which is already awful for traffic – the Viaduct is a popular choice for commuters and travellers driving up and down the country, which just adds to the misery for thousands every day.

M25

The M25 is one of the busiest motorways in the UK – and it’s not hard to see why. The road rings around London and is an integral part of city-workers’ morning and evening trip home. Hundreds of thousands of drivers use the M25 every day and this often becomes too much for the motorway and tailbacks begin to build up.

It can be an infuriating motorway, but think of it like this; if it wasn’t there, all those cars would be clogging up our towns and side roads – we don’t want that, do we?

A47

The A47 is the main road that connects England to Scotland – and it is notorious for lengthy jams. There have been a few occasions when drivers had to sleep in their cars overnight due to the non-moving traffic. According to RAC spokesman, Phil Hales, the road is definite black spot: “"The area around the A74 is definitely a black spot… As soon as something happens it will always cause severe delays."

M62 towards Manchester

Anybody who lives near Manchester will know of the misery that is the M62. If you commute to work every morning and you’d like to be on time, we suggest leaving at about 6:30am. It really is hell on Earth if you get stuck in the congestion.

A12 – London to Great Yarmouth

The A12 that connects London to Great Yarmouth was once voted the ‘worst road In Britain’ – not a great accolade to possess, is it? But it’s with good reason. According to figures posted in 2008, over 86,000 vehicles a day use the road, and it is this mass of cars that creates huge delays and jams.

Great article! Whoever wrote it obviously knows about bad roads - very well written. I completely agree with the Thelwall Viaduct - it's god awful.

How about the best road for being stuck in a traffic jam? I like the M62. Stunning scenery, sometimes accompanied by extreme weather as well. Can you tell I work from home? I think back fondly to traffic jams!

Totally agree with the M25, I am fairly certain I have crawled past every one of it's junction at one time or another, but my favorite has to be the A22/M25 split southbound, you can nearly always end up crawling through there.

Tell me about it, me and my wife spent four hours on it on boxing day trying to visit family, not pleasant at all! I would happily banked that for some rural roads.

I travel on the A12 from Norwich to Kent daily and have to agree that it is the worst road I have ever used on a commute. I have been taking the same route for a number of years and on most days I crawl along at 30-40 MPH. Why hasn't the road been improved?

I use the M25 on a daily basis and have to say that my journey to work is often a chance to wind down after a hectic morning! I am probably one of the lucky commuters as I travel out of the rush hour and leave the office before the evening rush. It gives me time to listen to some tunes on the radio after the school run in the mornings and allows me to shut off after work before I pick my daughter up in the afternoon.

M25 junction 2 with the A2 before the Dartford Bridge has to be one of the worst! I was once stuck there for 4 hours with nowhere to go. The problem is that if they close the tunnel then obviously it takes forever for the traffic to be diverted over the bridge. I avoid it like the plague if I can!

I cannot believe that you have not mentioned the Blackwall Tunnel!!! On so many occasions I have been stuck on the A2 with nowhere to go and sitting in a jam for hours looking out into the grey surroundings is enough to want you to abandon your vehicle.

It is not so much the roads as the people that use them. The turn off the M25 anti-clock to Gatwick and Croydon is probably an accident back spot but only is because people drive so badly. They will come down the fast lane and then cut across three lanes of cars at the very last minute.
Why? Are they is such a hurry that they could not get into lane half a mile back? Put a few police cars and cameras there and you could catch a lot of bad drivers and reduce some future accidents.
Blame the drivers and not the roads.

The M20 in Kent is a disaster. I use it daily and I would say at least one day per week my journey takes me a least an hour than normal because of shear weight of traffic.

It has to be Junction 1a at the Dartford Crossing. I commute from Colchester to Kent daily so have to endure the perils of the A12 followed by the nightmare of the Crossing. On a grey day believe me sometimes I feel like abandoning my vehicle and diving in to the Thames.

In my experience the worst road has to be A303 from Andover onwards "Single-carriageway and caravan hell"

The M6 between Junctions 6-12 has to be one of the worst routes to take, all you see is concrete views and nose to tail jams, awful.

The A12 from London to Great Yarmouth, Norfolk, has a particularly bad stretch near to Colchester in Essex. There are so many potholes and regular closures due to roadworks.

The M6 along the Birmingham stretch between junctions eight and five is a complete nightmare, I have spent far too many hours snaling along it and half of the time it never appears to be for any reason!!!

Very sadly, the A303 must now be a candidate. It used to be easy and, as soon as one cleared the M3, the A303 west bound was a delight. It is now full of traffic and the bit around Stonehenge is a disaster.

I have been a driver for a UK delivery company for 34 years all over the UK. The worst is the M8 glasgow to Edinburgh especially during rush hour. It is so slow and the traffic is ridiculous.

As a salesman I spend far too much time on the roads. There are so many awful roads to mention but the worst has to be the M25 Dartford Tunnel junction. To top it all I have recently heard that the tolls are to rise to £2.50 for a car next year.

The M25 is dreadful at Junction 5 and I always allow at least an hour on to my journey when travelling to Gatwick as on one occasion I very nearly missed my flight.

The M74 in the Lanarkshire area in Scotland has to be in the top 5. I have experienced severe delays on several occasions and the condition of the road is awful.

The most lethal is the beautiful but deadly A537 which winds through the Peak District between Macclesfield in Cheshire and Buxton in Derbyshire and is known locally as the 'Cat & Fiddle road'.
The A537 - which is popular with tourists, heavy goods vehicles and high-powered leisure motorcyclists - has severe bends, steep falls from the carriageway and is edged by dry-stone walls or rock face for almost all its length.

The most truly depressing road in the world, let alone the UK, has to be the A13 from Dagenham to Canning Town. Every day it is awful!
